Rumours at 'The Blackout'

(L-R) Duminda, Dayal, Neomal, Narendra and Sampath.

Yesterday was scheduled to be a red letter day for the new aggregation on the music scene, Rumours, because of their performance at Kandy's popular Swiss Residence nightclub 'The Blackout'.

This highly talented five piece band has been having outings at the Colombo Swimming Club, Warehouse the Colombo 2000, The Keg, CH & FC, Hippos and SSC gearing themselves for the holiday season as a preamble to hit the music scene in Colombo.

The band is led by Neomal Peiris guitarist/vocalist who handles most of the vocals for the band. He has the versatility to sing in different styles to suit retro music, ballads, country and rock. The band plays many covers of hits by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bryan Adams, Paul Simon and the exciting Latin rock of Santana.

The other guitarist is Dayal Athukorale who leans on the rock of Guns and Roses, Eagles and Eric Clapton to name a few, and enjoys himself as a vocalist as well. The keyboardist is Sampath Perera who doubles up on guitar and has a penchant for the Gypsy Kings repertoire.

The bass work is handled by Duminda Hettiarachchi, a self taught musician who in his own way is capable of handling the guitar or keyboards if and when necessary. Giving that thrust to the band is the drummer Narendra Guneratne who according to the leader of the band Neomal Peiris has great style with his sticks seated at the drum stool.

Ever since they got together when they were still in school at St. Joseph's College, Neomal the leader and Duminda the bassist were determined to make an impact on our music scene, which is in need of more input of new talent.

Although all five members are working 9-5 jobs they are committed and dedicated group of guys, who believe that rehearsals are a must for progress, and they pride themselves on maintaining a strict schedule in this area.
