President's Easter Sunday message

"Let us pray for lasting peace"

"Let us on this Easter Sunday pray for an early dawn of those aspirations of lasting peace cherished by all Sri Lankans," President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga stated in her Easter Sunday message.

The President further said in her message:

"The principal theme of Easter is Peace; it is the day the Prince of Peace rose from his tomb to guide his flock. "The people of our country have for too long suffered, we have been blinded by the greed of a few. While appreciating the absence of war in the past two or more years, I am confident a durable peace, one which respects the rights of all our citizens, is not too far away. Every man has the right to live and to live in peace, a dignified peace.

"Jesus Christ confirmed the right to live, through his Death on the Cross as well as through his Resurrection. Let us humble ourselves before these sublime truths and shun all things that stand in the way of peace. We as a nation have resolved never to go back to war. Let us now use our collective energies to develop our homeland. May I now quote from the Bible an appropriate verse.

"They shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4)."
