Strike-free health sector in the horizon by Carol Aloysius Health Ministry sources have expressed optimism that the five-member Committee appointed to look into salary anomalies in the government sector could finally come up with a formula for a strike-free health service. The issue was one of the major causes for the recent strikes by the nine thousand strong GMOA. The Committee led by the Treasury and Management Services includes one representative from the Health sector, Dr A.M.L. Beligaswatte, former Director General Health Services. "Representations from various sectors regarding the salary anomalies issue have been called for in press advertisements. We are hoping that a holistic approach to this question will once and for all settle the problem of constant strikes in the health sector", Dr Athula Kahandaliyanage, Director General Health Services told the Sunday Observer. Jagath Ariyaratne, Secretary of the GMOA also voiced an optimistic opinion on the outcome of the Committee now looking into the salary anomalies issue, reiterating that strikes was not the first line of action by the GMOA when resolving a health related issue. "Strikes are our last resort. In fact we don't wish to strike at all if we can settle our problems by negotiations", he emphasised. |
