Golden Key All-Island Rugby Sevens April 23 and 24

"The intention of the Golden Key Credit Card Company Limited is to foster sports at school level as we feel that its through sports that help build character. We also plan to have high profile sports events and also assist sportsmen and sportswomen and nurture them at school level. That's the reason why our focus has been among the schools.

This was the opinion made by Deputy Chairman - Chief Executive of the Golden Key Credit Card Company Limited Khavan Perera, whose establishment is also organising the Golden Key Privilege Card King's All-Island Schools Rugby 7s at the Bogambara Stadium on April 23 and 24 to mark the centenary of Kingswood College OBU, for which event the budget is about Rs. 1.1 million.

Perera further said that Golden Key and other divisions got involved in fostering sports since 1992 when they organised the Showbiz International Cricket Fiesta with a team led by former Indian great Sunil Gavaskar which side also included about six Test players from other nations. This was a benefit for former Sri Lanka cricket captains who needed some form of assistance and about five of them received Rs. 100,000 each,

He said: "A couple of years back, we thought of sponsoring and organising sports events out of Colombo. The first Golden Key Schools Rugby 7s for sides in Kandy was organised last year and was very successful and this year we are having it at an All-Island level and on a larger scale with all leading schools in the country vying for honours in the Cup, Plate and Bowl categories. We also organised a softball cricket tournament for schools in the Kandy district too.

Perera further said that his establishment is also looking at organising yet another cricket tournament at international level which will benefit the country, but they are not in a position to get into direct planning just yet due to circumstances "beyond our control". The Golden Key Credit Card Company have also assisted athletes from rural schools and also at international level.

The company is also looking into the possibilities of organising similar events in various sports in the North and East of the country in the near future.
