Excavated Buddha images at Ruwanweli Maha Seya

by Karel Roberts Rathnaweera

Fifty-six Buddha images excavated in an area lying adjacent to both the Ruwanmeli Maha Seya and the Basavakkulama tank in Anuradhapura will be placed in the immediate outer precincts (maluwa) of the Maha Seya on June 1, the day preceding Poson Poya Day and June 2, Poson Poya day,for veneration by the thousands of pilgrims who are expected to throng Anuradhapura for Poson.

The exposition will not be in the nature of an exhibition but for worshippers to venerate, Prof. T.G. Kulatunga of Sri Jayawardenapura University said when contacted by telephone while in Anuradhapura in connection with the arrangements.

Prof. Kulatunga said that the images, all of which are of bronze, with some plated in gold and silver, the work of ancient goldsmiths, date from the later Anuradhapura period but from different years.
