by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

A major event in the Industries, Tourism and Industrial Promotion Minister's calender was the appointment of new heads to the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and Ceylon Hotels Corporation. The event took place at the Sri Lanka Tourist Board last Friday.

Minister of Industries, Tourism and Industrial Promotion Anura Bandaranaike congratulated the newly appointed Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourist Board, Udaya Nanayakkara and Chairman, Ceylon Hotels Corporation, Chandra Mohotti after presenting them with the letters of appointment.

The Minister said he would make every endeavour to attract investors to Sri Lanka. Twenty investors have already made inquiries about setting up boutique concept hotels in the island.

Referring to the Board of Investment, the Minister said he wishes to make the institution more investor-friendly so that investors will not turn away and go elsewhere. "I will be taking drastic action against anyone if an investor is turned away. There are a few road blocks to be cleared," he said.

Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourist Board, Udaya Nanayakkara, referring to the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, said as much as it helped to develop the tourism industry, the national carrier should not take advantage and monopolise the open skies policy.

The tourist industry totally depends on the private sector and the functions of the Tourist Board is to make policies.

Deputy Minister of Tourism and Industrial Promotion Arjuna Ranatunga and Chairman, Ceylon Hotels Corporation also spoke.
