Lack of resources hinder Jaffna hospital by Anura Maitipe The Teaching Hospital in Jaffna lacks adequate staff to provide better laboratory services. It also needs a stable power supply and modern equipment, Consultant Haematologist Thurairaj Pushparaja told the Sunday Observer. He said over 800 blood samples were sent daily to the Jaffna laboratory for tests, but it was difficult to release blood reports on time due to lack of staff and equipment. The approved cadre of Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) for the Jaffna Hospital is 21, but only 10 MLTs are available at the Hospital. Most of the laboratory equipment are outdated and need to be replaced with modern equipment, he added. He said there was a regular breakdown of equipment due to fluctuations in the power supply to the hospital, which greatly hinders the smooth functioning of the laboratory service. A large number of patients are daily transferred from other base hospitals in the district like Killinochchi, Mullaithivu, Mannar and Vavuniya to the Jaffna Hospital. Higher officials in the Ministry of Health said "We have made arrangements to provide semi-automated equipment to the Jaffna Hospital, but such equipment cannot be placed in open air. Therefore, the Ministry has allocated the required funds to the Jaffna Hospital to instal air-condition facilities along with a separate transformer to prevent power interruptions to the hospital. |
