Sasakawa Health Award for FPA The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka has won the prestigious Sasakawa Health Award for the year 2004. The award was presented to Major Shirley Silva, President of Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka, at the 57th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organisation (WHO), at the Palais des Nations, Geneva on May 20. The Sasakawa Health Award is awarded to individuals and organisations selected globally for their outstanding contribution to uplift the health status of the people. The World Health Organisation administers the Sasakawa Health Award scheme on an annual basis. In adjudging Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka to be the recipient of this year's award, the Executive Board of WHO has acknowledged the Association's outstanding innovative work in health development. Last year, the Ministry of Health nominated Family Planning Association for the Sasakawa Health award. Last year, the Association also received the Country Award from Population Institute of USA, for 50 years of reproductive health care and services and fostering a better quality of life for the people of Sri Lanka. The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka is the pioneer family planning organisation in Sri Lanka operating since 1953 and the contributions it had made through its different programmes and projects to improve health and social well being of the people during the past 50 years were widely recognized both locally and internationally. |
