Kandy in late flourish beat Police 37/11

by Lal Gunesekera

Defending champions Kandy Sports Club remained unbeaten with their fourth consecutive win defeating Police by 37 points (1 goal, 6 tries) to 11 (1 try, 2 penalties) after leading 17-8 at half time in their Caltex 'A' division League Rugby Championship game at Police Park yesterday.

Kandy were made to sweat up to mid-way in the second session by a Police outfit, who played well in patches. It was in the final 10 minutes of play that Kandy through three tries stretched their lead to 26 points.

It was in this period that the Kandy threes got into their act though the forwards were in the thick of play right from the kick off.

Police lost to a far superior opposition, but were certainly not disgraced. If one could pinpoint the blame it was the outsides whose handling was poor and defence too left much to be desired - they did not keep a close tab on their opposite numbers.

Veteran Nagata who was one of the first Fijian professionals to play in Sri Lanka, was brought down to turn out for Police. He came as replacement in the final 10 minutes and operated from the base of the serum, but never looked the Nagata who played years ago.

Fijian Luke Rogayawa fluffed a simple 25 metre penalty right for Police in the second minute, but two minutes later, kicked correctly another from right in front of the posts (Police 3-0). Kandy went ahead in the 12th minute through a try by left winger Sanjeewa Jayasinghe which went unconverted (Kandy 5-3). They drew further ahead when centre Liyanage scored under the posts off an interception and with skipper Radhika Hettiaratchi making no mistake with the conversion, Kandy led 12-3.

Rogayawa then missed two penalties for Police, but skipper Anura Fernando slipped through off a maul far left formed off a line-out 10 metres away from Kandy's goal line. Rogayawa once again failed with the kick (Police 8-12). This was in the 33rd minute, and just before "lemons", Kandy went further ahead through Hettiaratchi who flew over 30 minutes after forming the overlap, but he missed the conversion. (Kandy 17-8).

After the "turn around", Regayawa did not fail with a simple 20 metre penalty in the second minute for Police to reduce the lead (11-17). In the 16th minute, Hettiaratchi again scored a terrific try for Kandy to lead 22-11. Then came the three tries in the final 10 minutes by right winger Pushpakumara, hooker Malith Silva and replacement centre Indrajith Bandaranayake for Kandy to win 37-11.
