Sports Ministry will pick the National Netball Coach

The Senior National Netball coach's post which has been vacant for couple of months will now be filled by the Sports Ministry.

According to a official of the Sports Ministry, the applications will be called by the Sports Ministry and then the Ministry will scrutinize them and the best will be called in for an interview, and the most suitable candidate will be appointed.

This is the new method of selecting and appointing the Senior National Netball coach after the Sports Ministry appointed an Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka, said the Sports Ministry official.

Ms. Yasmin Dharmaratne, the Secretary Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka said that earlier the Netball Federations of Sri Lanka selected the national coaches submitted the nominees to Ministry for approval. New the pattern has been completely changed.

The Sports Ministry should appoint a Senior National Netball coach soon as the coach will have to handle the National Netball Pool in preparation for the 2005 Asian Netball Championships to be staged in Colombo early 2005. Sri Lanka won the Asian Netball Championship defeating Singapore 55 goals to 54 in the final played at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in July 2002.

Ms. Hyacinth Wijesinghe was the national coach and Ms.Yasa Ramachandra took over.

First trial today

The first trial to pick players for the Asian Netball Championships pool will be worked off today, Sunday May 23 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium commencing at 9.30 a.m. Ms. Yasmin Dharmaratne, Secretary Interim Committee of the Netball federation of Sri Lanka said that ten best players from affiliated leagues, clubs and schools are invited to attend the trials. Ms. Dharmaratne said that all seven national selectors - Mrs. Seetha Wickremasinghe (Chairperson), Miss. Kumudini Gomez, Mrs. Thisanganee Shanmuganathan, Mrs. Jayanthi Somasekaran de Silva, Mrs. Priyanka Peiris, Mrs. Muthulakshmi Hegoda, Mrs. Rohini Perera will be present. (L.F.)
