ANCL lights up Mihintale

by Lakmal Welabada

Mihintale will be lit up beautifully with the 'Aloka Pooja,' presented for the 42nd time by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL), in association with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) from June 1 to 3. It is conducted in collaboration with the Sri Lanka.

The SLRC will telecast live a number of religious programmes starting with the 'Aloka Pooja' commencing on June 1, and continuing with the Sil campaign from 5.30am on June 2, and other events to be held on June 3.

The Aloka Pooja will be launched under the guidance of Ven Namal Wewa Dhammakeerthi Sri Ratnasara Nayaka Thera, Viharadhipathi of Mihintale Rajamaha Vihara and Upa Adikarana Sanghanayake of Nuwaragama Palatha.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and former Information and Media Minister Reginald Cooray will inaugurate the Aloka Pooja at 7.00pm on June 1. On Poson Poya Day (June 2), the Pooja will be conducted under the patronage of Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha and Public Security, Law and Order and Buddhasasana Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, at 7.00pm. ANCL Chairman Janadasa Peiris, Anuradhapura District Secretary U.D. Yapa and CEB Chairman Ananda S. Gunasekera will inaugurate the Aloka Pooja at 7.00pm on June 3.

Nishantha Ranatunga, Director General of the SLRC said they have organised so many facilities for the pilgrims who will be coming to observe Sil and others who visit Mihintale. "Around 190 new signboards are placed at each and every road in the sacred site of Mihintale - Anuradhapura to guide the visitors. A road map and a booklet (printed by Lake House) with details including important telephone numbers of the area, vehicle parks, rest houses and the historical value of Mihintale-Anuradhapura will be distributed to every vehicle entering the sacred area by the Traffic Police from the main road entrances at Mihintale Junction and Galkulama Junction," said Ranatunga.

A hundred scholarships will also be awarded to clever schoolchildren from lower income families in the Anuradhapura District by the SLRC. There will be a 'Dana Pinkama' (alms giving) at a Buddhist temple at Kahatagasdigiliya, Anuradhapura. The poor children of the area will also get a helping hand along with the 'Pinkama'.

A Buddhist Cultural Information Centre equipped with printed materials, CDs and computer facilities, which has been a necessity for a long time, will also be opened at the Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya during the Poson Week. Rupavahini will be the media sponsor of the 'Gajaba Udanaya', a musical show organised for the welfare of disabled soldiers, which will be held from June 1 to 6.
