by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

A five-member committee has been appointed by the Transport Ministry to study how best the Sri Lanka Railways could be improved. The Committee will hand over its report to the Ministry Secretary within two weeks and implementation process will begin after the Treasury approves it, Sri Lanka Railways Chairman Piyal de Silva who is also the head of the five-member committee told the `Sunday Observer' yesterday.

Silva said that they had already identified the areas for improvement and will be implemented in three stages. The committee will make short, mid and long term plans to upgrade the Railway services. The General Manager also said that the short-term plans will be implemented in a few months time but time frames cannot be given for two other categories.

He further added that the Fort Station had opened up parking facilities for railway commuters from last week. He said that the facility will be provided only for commuters on long trips and Rs. 200 will be charged per day. Questioned on the cancellation of the Railway Authority he said that he still had not been informed by the Ministry.
