Public warned of floods, earthslips by Anura Maitipe The monsoonal rains, which we have experienced over the last few days, will continue for sometime; over 70 millimetres of rainfall was experienced in most parts of the country during the past few days, Director Meteorology Department K. R. Abayasinghe told the Sunday Observer. The South West monsoonal rains were effective during these days. As a result, the water levels of Kalu, Gin, Walawe, Kelani, Nilwala and Mahaweli rivers sharply increased, he said. The National Building Research Institution (NBRI) has warned the public about the possibility of sudden earthslips in the Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matara, Galle and Hambantota districts. The NBRI has urged the public to be vigilant over sudden cracks on rocks, emergence of sudden spring mud water or any other signs of earthslips and inform them through the grama sewaka or divisional secretary of the area. Munasinghe has also urged the public not to stay in open areas or around trees during rains since showers could prevail along with lightning and winds which could damage trees. Authorities at the Social Services Ministry has already arranged a special task force with the help of the Sri Lanka Navy to meet any flood situation in the event of an overflow of these rivers or possible earth slips, which may be caused as a result of heavy rains. |
