BASL condemns corruption of lawyers The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at its Executive Committee meeting last Monday unreservedly condemned all acts of corruption and malpractices concerning the administration of justice in any form. However, according to a news release from the BASL, the Association has not received any complaint against any lawyer in respect of alleged involvement in bribery as stated in recent media reports where misconduct of a High Court Judge was highlighted. The release further stated: "The Executive Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka is greatly perturbed by the recent media reports concerning the alleged judicial misconduct of a High Court Judge and the alleged involvement of lawyers in bribery concerning a drug related case. "An allegation against any Judge is a matter for the Judicial Service Commission. "The Bar Association unreservedly condemns all acts of corruption and malpractice concerning the administration of justice in any form whatsoever. "The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has taken and will continue to take strict disciplinary action against any lawyer who is guilty of any professional misconduct. However, we note that upto now the BASL has not received any complaint against any lawyer, in respect of his alleged involvement in bribery as alleged in the recent media reports. "If and when any complaint is received, the BASL will take prompt steps to investigate into such complaints and take appropriate disciplinary action warranted in the circumstances irrespective of the personalities concerned." |
