Kandy poised for fifth win

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy Sports Corr

The defending Caltex League champions Kandy SC should have no difficulty in notching up their fifth win for the season when they take on Havelocks Sports Club in their Caltex League Rugby Tournament match to be played at Nittawela Rugby Stadium today, commencing at 5 p.m. Kandy Sports Club are the table leaders at present winning all four games with 18.85 points to their credit.

Havelocks SC are lying sixth with a solitary win in five games and have 4.90 points. But Kandy SC has been having comparatively easy games where they scored cake walk wins except the match against Police which they won 37-11 which has been their lowest margin of win.

Their line has been crossed just twice this season and so far they have accumulated 339 points while giving away just 41 points mainly through penalties. Kandy Sports Club, needs more exposure to stronger opponents before their next week's game against Army in Colombo. One of the sore areas for them this season is their spot kicking where they have lost valuable points as a result of wayward place kicking.

They dearly missed the services of their full back Nalaka Weerakkody who was injured in the earlier games and this week has tied the nuptial knot, and appears to be certain to miss this week's game. Place kicking is one area that Kandy SC should seriously look into as it could crucial in a close game. With Kandy experiencing intermittent showers, if the visitors provide good opposition then, a rousing game is in store.

In the matches played so far the Havelocks team have been not allowing their opponents to have too many liberties but they have not scored enough points to ensure wins. Kandy has so far beaten Old Zahirians 141-0, Air Force 80-12, Navy 18-8 and Police 37-11.
