Dengue up, up by Shanika Sriyananda The uncontrolled spread of Dengue has resulted in 7896 infections and 51 deaths from January 1 to July 8, this year. According to Epidemiology Unit (EU) officials, suspected dengue cases are escalating mainly due to carelessness of the public. Compared to last year, where only 4672 cases reported throughout the year, there is a 80 per cent increase during the first six months this year. Topping all districts, the Colombo district has been identified as the country's most vulnerable area and the total number of suspected cases reported from January to July 8 is 1599, which was 1003 last year. Seventeen people in the Colombo district have already died of dengue and only three deaths reported from the district last year. According to EU officials the worst affected areas are Colombo, Gampaha and Kandy, while Kalutara, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura and Matale are also identified as vulnerable areas.Meanwhile, Health Ministry and the Municipal Council authorities are still calling for a strong public commitment to eliminate mosquito breeding places, which is the most effective solution to prevent dengue epidemic which is sweeping across the country. |
