Polls sans queues

Elections to Western, Southern, Central, North-Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils concluded yesterday with no major incidents. Most conspicuous feature of yesterday's election was the low voter turn out with no polling queues most of the time, except in plantation sector polling centres. Although over 9.5 million voters were eligible to cast their votes at 7663 polling centres, the turn out was between around 20 to 30 per cent during the first five hours of voting.

'No need to delay Norochcholai'

If commissioning of the Norochcholai Coal Power Project (NCPP) pushed further, purchasing of power from the private sector is inevitable to cater to the increasing demand for electricity, which grows at a rate of 10 percent annually, Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha told the 'Sunday Observer'.

ADB grants US $ 12.5 million

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide emergency assistance amounting to US$12.5 million to help rehabilitate transport infrastructure damaged during severe flooding in southern Sri Lanka in May 2003. The assistance will restore roads and bridges to pre-flood conditions in worst-hit Galle, Hambantota, Kalutara, Matara and Ratnapura districts.

'Time to think about the peace process'

Senior Vice President of the Tamil National Alliance and Batticaloa district Parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham reiterated that the LTTE was committed to peace process and they would not violate the Ceasefire Agreement or engage in any form of violence to disturb the peace process.
