WB Vice President due here The World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region, Praful C. Patel will join the staff of the Colombo Office to commemorate 50 years of World Bank support for Sri Lanka on July 15. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will be the guest of honour and Finance Minister Sarath Amunugama the chief guest at the ceremony. The signing of the first World Bank loan (US$ 19.1 million) to Sri Lanka was on July 9 1954, to finance the Aberdeen-Laxapana power generation project. During these past 50 years the World Bank has provided both financial and technical support to Sri Lanka for economic development. This is Mr. Patel's second visit to Sri Lanka since assuming office and the first since the election of the new government. He is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapakse, Minister of Finance, the new Governor of the Central Bank, several government officials, and private sector and civil society representatives during his two day visit. |
