Public servants demand interim relief by Ananda Kannangara The Public Sector Trade Union Committee (PSTUC) on Friday requested the Finance Ministry to grant an interim allowance of Rs. 3,000 to all public sector workers until the Tissa Devendra salary commission proposals were implemented. In a letter to Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, the PSTUC pointed out that salaries of most of the health workers were increased at this juncture without any focus on salaries of workers in other public sector institutions. The salaries in the health sector were increased with effect from January 1,1997 after removing salary anomalies by circulars dated January1, 2004 and February 2, 2004, issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Health. "Under these circumstances there is a gap of Rs. 3000 between the salaries of workers in the health sector and others in the public sector," Convenor, PSTUC W.H. Piyadasa told the Sunday Observer. He said this situation has caused pain of mind to public servants of all sectors other than those in the health sector and therefore, the Government should at least grant an interim allowance of Rs. 3,000, per month considering the present cost of living, Piyadasa said. Although several important issues, related to salary anomalies in the public sector were brought to the notice of former Public Administration Minister Vajira Abeyawardana, they were ignored, he added. |
