Sri Lanka's best known poetess and award winner Monica Ruwanpathirana passed away after a prolonged illness yesterday morning.

Ruwanpathirana published her first poetry book 'Api denna saha thawath keepadenek' in 1973. She had her primary education at the village school at Galpamuna in Matara and did her Advanced Level at the Sangamiththa Balika Vidyalaya, Galle.

She is a graduate of the University of Peradeniya. Ruwanpathirana authored over 23 books.
