Festival of cricket in UK From Colvin L. de Silva, Our London Corr. Festival of Cricket organised by the OBAs of Cricket playing schools took place recently at the Civil Service Cricket ground in Chiswick, West London with 22 teams vying for honours. The participating teams were from past pupils of Ananda, Isipatana, Royal, St. Josephs, Trinity, Thurstan, Colombo Hindu, Dharmaraja, De Mazenod, Mahinda, St. Aloysius, St. Peter's, Holy Cross, Nalanda, St. Anthony's, St. Sebestian, Wesley, D. S. Senanayake, Richmond, St. Benedict's, S. Thomas' and Zahira. While a seven-a-side cricket tournament gets under way, thousands of Sri Lankans gather at the grounds not only to watch the matches, but also take part in the fun and frolic associated with the event. Organisers provide trade stalls and Sri Lankan products are specially air lifted for sale at the grounds. FOC, as it is popularly known makes it a point to help charities in Sri Lanka from the income generated by organising the annual event. Maharagama Cancer Hospital and the Chest Hospital in Welisara have been beneficiaries in past. This year's event, held continuously for the last sixteen years was managed by a committee of experienced officials headed by its President Rajiv Perera, Secretary Kumar Ravindran and Treasurer Methsiri Wijeratna assisted by an army of back room boys. |
