Rs. 175,000 on offer for 89th Tennis Nationals

Prize money totalling Rs. 175,000 is on offer for the 89th National Championships of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) at Greenpath from August 9 to 15.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SLTA, Lionel Almeida also disclosed to the 'Sunday Observer' that Lefarge Cement has come forward to sponsor the nationals for three years (2004 to 2006) at Rs. 500,000 and that the SLTA is yet making every attempt to get down some top players, particularly from India, to compete in Colombo this year.

The Junior Nationals is scheduled to be staged from August 2 to 8 also at the NTC.

Also slotted in for August 16 to 22 is the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women's Circuit Championships sponsored by Jembo with US $10,000 as prize money. ITF ranked players will be in action in the singles and doubles also at the NTC.

The Men's Futures Championships also of the ITF is scheduled to be worked off at the NTC from August 30 to September 5 with total prize money being US $10,000.

There are two "back to back" junior international tournaments also of the ITF down to be staged at the NTC. The first is from September 6 to 12 and other from September 13 to 19 where top juniors (both boy's and girl's) from the Asian region and also Europe are scheduled to compete.

There is also an ITF Satellite comprising four tournaments at four different venues in Colombo in October-November where prize money totalling US $6250 is on offer for each tournament. The first is from October 11 to 17 at the Queen's Club courts, the second from October 18 to 24 at the SSC courts, the third from October 25 to 31 at the SLTA Playing Section and the fourth - the 'Masters' at the NTC from November 1 to 7.

There is also the Women's International Club conducted Junior Championships from July 19 to August 1.

The Moors Sports Club Open Championships which is a ranking tournament of the SLTA, is scheduled to be worked off from August 23 to 29 at Braybrooke Place, while the National Schools' Championships is to be worked off at the NTC from September 6 to 10.

Also in September is the SSC Open at Maitland Place (13 to 19) and SLTA's Junior Open Championships at NTC (20 to 26), while the Panadura Open Championships is scheduled from November 29 to December 5, St. Michael's Club Championships in Batticaloa from November 22 to 28 and People's Bank Championships at the NTC from December 6 to 12.

Almeida also disclosed that the SLTA will conduct a tournament for parents and children for the first time at the NTC from November 22 to 28.
