Chess nationals today

The National Men's and Women's Chess Championships starts today (Sunday) at the Singapore Informatics Computer Institute on the 2nd floor of Liberty Plaza and is scheduled to end on July 21. Fourteen players have qualified to play in each tournament, which will be on a round robin basis over 13 rounds.

Based on the results of these two tournaments, the men's and women's sides will be picked to represent Sri Lanka at the Chess Olympiad in Spain later this year.

On July 16 (which is a rest day), Singapore Informatics, in collaboration with the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL), has organised a coaching workshop to be conducted by two former national champions - T.D.R. Pieris, who is a well known chess coach, and FIDE Master Harinlal Aturupana at 2.30 p.m. Entries are limited to 80 players.

Chess enthusiasts could follow the nationals online at www.sici.lk/chessnationals2004.
