Royal rout Ananda 39-5 by Ranjan Anandappa Royal College emerged easy winners over Ananda College in their much looked forward to schools' encounter by 39 points (3 goals, 3 tries, and a penalty) to 5 (a try) at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds yesterday. Ananda did not play badly, but their resources were simply inadequate to put the brakes on Royal who played with better co-ordination and cohesion to rattle Ananda. The Anandians started promisingly, drawing first blood in the first 15 minutes scoring a try through Ransith Pieris off a scrum which went unconverted. Royal hit back immediately when full back Bahudeen cut loose to send centre Rajith Jayasundera over the line for an unconverted try. Bahudeen put over a penalty earlier to put Royal on the lead 8-5. Shehab Bahudeen, Royal's fullback underscored that he is the most inspiring player contributing 24 points out his side's 39 points. His unerring kicks to touch and resilient running gave his side a tremendous advantage and the Anandians could not do much when he was in full cry. Royal led 20 -5 at the breather. Royal's forwards, spearheaded by second rower Danushka Rajapakse, flanker Ayesh Rahid, Number 8 Prabath Udugampola prop Fayaz Fazal and hooker Bimal Herath combined effectively joined by fly half Varun Wijewardena and centre Rajith Jayasundera. Centre Jayasundera (3), Danushka Rajapakse (1) and Shehab Bahudeen (2) were the try scorers for Royal. A. C. Tennekoon refereed. Royal won the under-17 match: 29-7. |
