Antonians crush arch rivals Trinity 24-8

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Our Kandy Sports Correspondent

St. Anthony's College, Kandy celebrated their 150th Anniversary with a rousing 24 points (3 tries, 3 penalties) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) win over traditional rivals Trinity College in an inter-school rugby match played at Trinity College Rugby Stadium, Pallekelle yesterday. At half Antonians led 11-3.

Trinity will have to blame themselves for this ignominious defeat as they played badly and lacked in fitness. They were also disjointed and appeared to be without a game plan and dropped passes at crucial stages.

But it was the lions who drew first blood when winger Isuru Jayasena put over a 35 metre penalty in front.

But the Antonians hit back almost immediately when a penalty was offered to them outside the lines '22'. Scrum half Dhanushka Wijeratne taking a quick short tap squeezed his way but was brought down almost on the line. But second row forward Mohamed Ali who followed quickly collected the pass from the fallen Wijeratne and went over mid left. Fly half Shaheer Reyal failed with the kick at goal.

From here there was no stopping of the Antonians as they further increased the lead to 8-3 through a penalty fired by Shaheer Reyal.

In the 29th minutes another 40 metre penalty fired by Reyal helped the Antonians to 11-3 lead at the short break.

In the 11th minute of the second half, fly half Shaheer Reyal fired his third penalty to put the Antonians in the box seat leading 14-3. In the 14, the Trinitians took play deep into the Antonian territory and a potential scoring opportunity was there but again the three-quarters dropped the ball like a hot potatoe and the Antonian full back Mohammed Safraz hacked the loose ball and collected it and blitzed his way to score mid left - a move which covered a distance of nearly 70-metres. This try was not goalled. Antonians led 19-3.

A penalty saw the lions working their three-quarters which ended with winger Niroshan Sanjeewa diving over for a fine try by the right corner flag. This was not goalled, but the lead was reduced to 19-8.

With play drifting into the final minute the Antonians put the icing on their cake of victory when winger Niranjan Zavier with a spurt of speed scored by the right corner flag.

Trinity won the under-17 game 39-0.
