Europeans, Argentineans Voice Support For Cuban Five

Havana, July 9 (Prensa Latina)

Europeans and Argentineans have joined the growing ranks of people concerned worldwide with the fate of five Cubans imprisoned in the US for fighting terrorism, the Cuban National Agency said Friday.

European Solidarity Groups currently in Havana have extolled the Cuban Five, as they are known, considering them an example of strength and dedication to the struggle against terrorist activities, according to British Bruce Armit, of the Jose Marti European Brigade.

These fighters for peace are in jail for defending their Homeland from attacks by Miami"s (ultra right) Mafia, added Armit, who, together with European peers, has been doing agricultural work and attending solidarity meetings in the island since late June.

In a meeting with relatives of the Cuban Five, Armit stated these men were sentenced for upholding the universal right of the peoples to defend themselves from foreign aggressors.

The European Jose Marti Brigade, made up by some 250 people from 20 countries, arrived in Cuba on June 28 and will stay here through July 18.

Meanwhile, Argentineans supportive of the island are readying for the National Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba in their country, in which campaigning for the release of the five political prisoners will be a highlight, said Norberto Galliotti, one of the organizers.

The promoters, to meet in Santa Fe city, on August 14 and 15, aim to propagate the achievements of the Cuban Revolution among local social sectors, while simultaneously focussing on the cause of the Cuban Five, who were subject to an unfair trial in Miami.

Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Fernando Gonzalez were detained almost six years ago in the US and are currently serving harsh sentences there, ranging from 15 years to double life imprisonment.

They had penetrated cells of ultra right Cuban-American terrorist organizations in Miami, and presented the US government with hard evidence on it. But instead of being heeded were charged with conspiracy to commit espionage and sentenced.
