by Chanuka Mannapperuma

The Sri Lanka chapter of International Federation for Alternative Trade (IFAT) will launch the International Fair trademark in Sri Lanka to support local trade justice. The launching ceremony will be here at the Rukmani Devi Memorial Hall,Negombo on August 7 at 4.30pm.

The Sri Lanka chapter of IFAT will also hold a series of activities such as Fair trade meetings, rallies and discussions in Galle and Bandarawela following the main function.

Director of the Siyath Foundation Kala Peiris de Costa said, that the International Fair trademark is a symbol of trade justice and this is the first global mark for Fair trade organisations to be used in the North and South. 'The mark will recognize and unite fair trade organisations, enabling them to campaign for trade justice with greater power,'he said.

The message which will be carried out with the trademark of justice through fair trading will be one of support for the poor and also promote the ideals of fair trade. This would support the poor and marginalised producers to enter the international market,Peiris added.

Speaking at the press conference Director, Export Marketing,Gospel House Modestus Karunarathne said, that currently there are 130 IFAT members in 42 countries who have registered for the mark which distinguishes fair trade organisations from other commercial organisations that are involved in fair trade through the purchase of products labelled under the certification system where it is a mark to identify fair trade organisation.

Seven organisations in Sri Lanka including Ashley Exports, the Central Council for Disabled Persons,Golden palm International,Gospel House Handicrafts,Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya Sharmadana Sangamaya, Peoples's organization for Development Import and Export(PODIE) and Siyath Foundation have obtained the International fair trade mark.A person who wants to register under IFAT, can contact any one of these seven organisations.
