Balance of trade with Japan not favourable to Sri Lanka - Suzuki

Sri Lanka should increase its exports to Japan to maintain the balance of trade between the two countries, Chairman and CEO Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan (SMC) Osamu Suzuki said.

'At present the balance of trade is not favourable to Sri Lanka as its imports are higher than its exports to Japan", Suzuki said when he arrived here on a 24- hour visit to declare open Sri Lanka's first ever 24- hour Motor Marvels Service (Pvt) Ltd (MMPL), service centre at Kirula road.

To develop Sri Lanka's economy, it should increase export volumes to a considerable level as how Japan is doing,he said.

However, SMC do not have any plans to set up a plant in Sri Lanka since we are currently in the process of improving the India manufacturing/assembling plant, Suzuki said.

MMPL Managing Director Sheran Fernando said that they realized that with most cars being owner- driven in that they need the use of their vehicle during the day repairs and services resulted in tremendous inconvenience.

Fernando said that their Kirula Road service centre would provide international levels of customer satisfaction, thus raising the average levels of customer expectation in the industry.

After- sales service is the key to customer satisfaction and MMPL is determined to provide a highly personalized and quality service to all our customers, Fernando said. MMPL is the local agent for Suzuki brand.

'Our target for Suzuki is to be among the top three vehicles in the country and the new 24 hour service centre will definitely help the Suzuki brand to achieve this position',he said. In Sri Lanka over 1000 new vehicles and 5000 reconditioned vehicles have been sold to date.

In Japan for the last fiscal year, Suzuki's total domestic automobile sales grew to 637,214 units, placing Suzuki at fourth place in the Japanese domestic car market.Suzuki has also held the number one position in the mini vehicle market, a position maintained by Suzuki for the last 30 years consecutively.

Suzuki's automobile exports numbered 1.108,000 units for the last fiscal year. Suzuki's business partnership with General Motors have further strengthened its position.
