Galle Face Hotel - the legacy lives on

Colombo's landmark of hospitality, the Galle Face Hotel has embarked on an restoration project for its southern wing. The Boi approved project is targetting the high spending traveller who is in search of a special experience in Sri Lanka.

The project estimated over Rs 700 million will include the refurbishment of over 63 de luxe rooms and 20 suites most of which will have a sea view.

Each suite will be equipped with luxurious fittings and facilities and a butler service. A new executive lounge will cater specifically to the business traveller who will also be able to enjoy the facilities of a new business centre.

The new fittings and refurbishment of the kitchen has cost over Rs 30 million. The new shopping piazza in the forecourt of the new southern wing will consist of an array of exclusive retail outlets which will include some of the most prestigious names in this country and overseas. It will include two speciality restuarants, a pub and a wine bar with a cellar in the basement. The basement occupying 20,000 square feet will be the spa while there will be a gym and a beauty salon as well.

The restoration is being carried out with great care and attention to detail because the management decided to retain the architectural authencity of the original design and structure while including the modern conveniences. The Chairman of the Galle Face Hotel Sanjeev Gardiners vision is to bring in the modern luxury that today's traveller needs while retaining the grandeur and heritage of the property.

Galle Face Hotel has a reputation for the highest number of employees per guest. With the commissioning of the southern wing there will be a need to recruit new staff and retrain existing staff.

There is an ongoing program of training in customer orientation and skills development.

The changes will also include additional facilities for the staff including changing rooms and accomodation.
