Bank has hand in refurbishment of Museums

The HSBC Bank of Sri Lanka authorities has agreed with Minister of Cultural affairs and National Heritage Vijitha Herath to meet the cost of expenditure involved in the refurbishment of Anuradapura and Polonnaruwa galleries displaying sculptures of artistic and historic importance.

Launching an exciting project,recently HSBC's Chief Executive officer(CEO) Mark Humble, presented the token cheque valued at Rs.6 million to Minister Herath at the Colombo Museum's auditorium.

This is very significant event because HSBC is a foreign Bank which agreed to develop our cultural heritage. "I think that they have opened the eyes of similar institutions in undertaking further aid for national causes as this. We have to protect our ancient places and important things.Through this kind of assistance we can easily protect our heritage" minister Herath said.

Addressing the delegates,the CEO of HSBC said,that HSBC believed in supporting projects that foster education and contribute towards marking a meaningful difference to the local community.'Our main aim is to help more people to appreciate Sri Lanka 's rich past and especially to instil in our children an appreciation of the glory of past eras.

The sponsorship of upto Rs.3 Million per gallery will be utilised to revamp these two galleries with the installation of light boxes and information panels- to educate the visitors about the past eras .

The project will be supervised by prof.Leelananda Prematilleke with the assistance of team from the departments of Archaeology, department of National Museums and The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology.Prof.Leelananda was responsible for organizing the Polonnaruwa Museum which has gained international fame for its design and layout. He has also organised the Tooth Relic Museum,Kandy and the Dambulla Museum paintings.
