Further inquiries into hand grenade explosion

by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

Narahenpita Police are making further inquiries to ascertain how the Police Constable who blew himself up along with his girlfriend last Thursday noon at the Police Transport Division, Narahenpita, came to possess two hand grenades which he managed to smuggle all the way from Batticaloa.

Though only one hand grenade exploded killing the Police Constable and the woman computer operator instantaneously, another unexploded hand grenade was found inside the computer room. Police are investigating whether the two hand grenades were stolen.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that hand grenades are issued to policemen serving in the operational areas of the North-East.

The policeman had come from Batticaloa to meet his girl friend. The two victims have been identified as Police Constable D.G. Chandradasa, a resident of Habaraduwa and H. Nayana Puspakumari of Ahangama. The explosion had occurred after an argument between the two, police said. The Magistrate, Colombo Court No. 3 visited the scene yesterday.

Further inquiries are being conducted by OIC (Crimes) Narahenpita Police Sub-Inspector Lasantha Kaluarachchi and OIC Narahenpita Chief Inspector T. Premadasa.
