J'pura University reopens this month

by Chamitha Kuruppu

The University of Sri Jayawardenapura will be reopened for first and second year students before the end of this month.

The university was reopened for third and fourth year students last Wednesday after being closed for over one month due to a conflict between two student groups, which ended with the death of a student.

Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Chandima Wijabandara told the Sunday Observer that the first and second year academic sessions will recommence during the second week of August. "This will be done on a faculty-by-faculty basis and during the last week of August, we look forward to reopening the Management and Arts Faculties", Prof. Wijabandara said.

Meanwhile, the university will appoint a Proctor this week to look into the discipline of students and arrest violence among undergraduates. Prof. Wijabandara said the appointment of the Deputy Vice Chancellor will also take place during the week.

By appointing a Proctor and a Deputy Vice Chancellor, the university looks forward to curbing violence among students and enforcing strict discipline inside the premises, he said. The Acting Vice Chancellor also said that anti-riot squads and special mobile units by the Police will continue for at least six months.

He said the Police will not enter the university premises unless violence erupts among students. Even during such situations, the police cannot enter the premises without the permission of the university administration, he added.
