Child soldiers in UNICEF camp

by Rashomi Silva

The LTTE on Friday handed over 34 child soldiers to the UNICEF in Kilinochchi, the UNICEF spokesman, Geoffrey Keele announced.

The 'soldiers', 21 girls and 13 boys were around the ages of 14 to 17. "We welcome the release of the children and consider the release of every child a step in the right direction, Keele said.

Despite the release of these children, the LTTE still continues to recruit children, the spokesman added that it was a "sad fact". According to UNICEF figures in May and June the LTTE had recruited over 180 children, he said.

The released children will be initially transferred to a transit camp where they will be assessed, and the UNICEF hopes to reunite these children with their parents soon, he said.
