Kandy SC beat CH & FC 29-17

By S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent

High drama prevailed as Kandy Sports Club became Caltex League champions for the sixth successive but not before CH & FC walked off the field with twelve minutes play remaining in the key Caltex League rugby league second match played before a record crowd at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium in Kandy yesterday.

At the time the match was abandoned, the score was Kandy Sports Club leading 29 points to 17 after leading 17-5 at the lemons.

Kandy collected their points through two goals and three tries while CH & FC from a goal and two tries. The drama started when Kandy scored their fifth try in the 68th minute of play which the CH & FC side disputed and argued with the referee Aruna Rankothge who was compelled to show the red card to one of the players and the arguing continued followed by the walk out of the CH & FC side lock, stock and barrel.

The Match Commissioner former national player Viper Gunaratne then appeared in the field when there was no signs of the CH & FC side returning to play, awarded the match to Kandy Sports Club and the score at the time CH & FC walked out stood as the final score. In the 13th minute Kandy forged again when left winger Sanjeewa Jayasinghe displaying sheer speed sliced through the CH defence to score but the corner flag and Faatauaa failed to add the extra points. Kandy 10-5.

In the 21st minute of play, a penalty awarded to Kandy saw them taking the short tap and after a series of mauls, flanker Sumedha Jayasinghe slung a pass to No. 8 Laga Tulagese who powered his way to score mid right and Faatauaa goalled this try, Kandy led 17 - 5

But after the turn around CH & FC were seen in a very aggressive mood and they kept attacking their opponents defence.

A penalty awarded to CH in the 7th minute of play saw them kicking to touch from the line out they scored off the maul through flanker N. Nawakrua who dived over near the right post. Fly half Saranga Jayakoddy added the extra points. CH 12 - 17.

But Kandy once again increased their lead when Laga taking the short sent a pass to fly half Sajith Maillikarachchi who with a burst of speed sliced through the CH defence to score mid right and Faatauaa added the extra points and Kandy led 24 - 12.

CH & FC once again reduced the lead when they scored off a line with No. 8 Dushan Lewke pounding his way to far right. Jayakoddy failed to add the extra points CH 17 - 24.

Then came the controversial stage of the game. With 12 minutes to go for the final whistle, Kandy's forwards drove play deep inside the CH territory and a penalty awarded saw Kandy's prop forward Duminda Pullukuttiarachchi going over the line mid right for a disputed try. It was at this stage that pandemonium broke out with the CH & FC refusing to take further part in the match and even the kick at goal for the last try was not taken as the CH team was not in their position behind the goal post. Final scores Kandy won 29 - 17.
