Sound cement policy important

The government should draft a proper cement policy to maintain quality standards in the country, Chairman Holcim (Lanka) Ltd (HLL) Manilal Fernando said.

"The absence of a proper cement policy has caused a major problem for customers in terms of quality standards",Fernando said at the "Holcim Awards 2004" ceremony last week.

He said that HLL a subsidiary of Holcim Ltd of Switzerland will invest US $ 50 million for a major expansion project this year .

Main purpose of this investment was for HLL to venture into the export market in a big way, Fernando added.

He said that Holcim cement conforms to all International standards, and original name "Sanstha" has never been removed from the pack.

Fernando said that Holcim had invested more than US $ 100 million in the recent past to increase its capacity and standard.

Managing Director Peter Spirig said that the company is geared to focus on innovation, new product development and mainly social responsibility.

"Our responsibility is towards society and the people at large" Spirig said . HLL is going to be a global brand with the venturing into international markets in the future.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board was judged the "Best Project 2004" at the ceremony for the Wakmulla water supply unit in the Hambantota district.
