SME entrepreneurs sharpen skills by Chanuka Mannapperuma The Business Development Center (BDC)-Western Region,which is a project of the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) held a "Stakeholder Workshop" recently at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. Main objective of this Workshop was to enhance the skills of the Small and Medium Sector Entrepreneurs (SME) and providers to strengthen their services, improve productivity and meet the present market driven economy of the country. Speaking at the Workshop Managing Director SLBDC, Charitha Ratwatte said,that the majority of our economy depends on the SME sector, such as tea ,rubber and coconut .The village based tourism industry has also helped boost our national economy.Under the special policy framework we hope to provide jobs for unemployed and the government too has taken a keen interest in this project, he added. To make this a reality ADB and GOSL has established the "Business Services Support Facility" (BSSF) as a component of the SME sector development program. Explaining what the BSSF is about, its Executive Director Udaya Madugalla said that,this service has a lot of benefits such as technological developments,making project reports,financial facility development, productivity development, human resources development, marketing and sales development,management and policy planning development, formulation of project reporting and co-ordineting financial aid. The BDC network is owned and operated by three reputed private sector business development organisations. SLBDC,Industrial Services Bureau (ISB),Sarvodaya Economic Enterprise Development Services (SEEDS).BDC consists of six business centres such as Colombo,Kandy,Kurunegala,Matara,Trincomalee and Jaffna. |
