JCI Sri Lanka celebrates 50 years

Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a worldwide federation of professionals and young leaders and entrepreneurs founded in 1944. There are 200,000 active JCI members in more than 6,000 communities more than 100 countries throughout the world representing most of the world's nationalities, ethnicities and religions, yet sharing a bond of friendship and core beliefs that help members surmount multiple challenges.

JCI-members are 18-to 40-year-old men and women who have joined a local chapter. They act to organize projects in the areas of Business, Individual, Community and International Development. JCI members meet in local, national and international level, to exchange ideas and share best practices, to learn from dynamic speakers, trainers at interactive seminars and presentations and grows personally and professionally through these activities that benefit communities and members themselves to become better leaders.

All members share the same belief in the advancement of the global community by providing young people the opportunity to develop the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change.

There are several international region meetings annually in Asia, Europe, America as well as Annual World Congress, this year to be held in Fukuoka, Japan. This years Asia Pacific Conference was held in Penang Malaysia where 30 Sri Lankan Jaycees took part.

50 Years of Jaycees in Sri Lanka

Junior Chamber International Sri Lanka (JCISL) is the Local Branch of Junior Chamber International, the world's largest Youth Leadership Development Organization.

This year JCI Sri Lanka is celebrating 50 years of Jayceesm. JCISL has contributed immensely towards the development and recognition of youth talent in Sri Lanka.

Projects such as Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP). Community projects reaching out to the needy, Training Programs for various spectrums from schoolchildren to professionals, Leadership in Action seminar series have received much local and international recognition throughout the legendary 50 years.

Father of Jaycees in Sri Lanka

The Father of Jaycees in Sri Lanka the late JCI. Sen. Sam Wimalasekera (born on 20th June 1937 and died on 31st March 2004) was the founder of the movement. At that time this young lad from Horana had completed his Degree in Chemistry and was awarded a Rotarian Scholarship to do his Masters Degree in the United States.

At the age of 25 he came back to his motherland not only with his Masters Degree, but also with the wonderful concept of Jayceesm, in the year 1954. From then onwards he had served the Jaycees in Sri Lanka starting from his home Chapter Colombo Jaycees.

The National Board including as National President and the International Board as an International Vice President. The Late. Sen. Wimalasekera, a quiet and humble gentleman with a big heart, travelled on roads less travelled in his endeavours as a Jaycees and left us with a legend to continue.

JCI World President

59th JCI World President for year 2004 Fernando Sanches-Arias, from Maracaibo, Venezuela would be the Chief Guest at the 50th Year Celebrations. JCI Sen. Sanchez-Arias joined JCI in 1988 and became National President of JCI Venezuela in 1959.

From 1996 onwards he has been in several international positions, as JCI Chief Commissioner of Growth and Development, JCI Executive Vice President, and Chief Executive Assistant to the JCI.

He is an Honours Graduate in Administration and has been president of his own international consulting, training and coaching firm for 14 years and is a business learning facilitator, executive coach and conference speaker. He is also scheduled to make a courtesy call to key government official and meet officials from the Federation of Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

50th year celebrations

Some of the events in store apart from the Golden Jubilee Banquet to celebrate 50 years of Jaycees in Sri Lanka would be:

* The Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) on August 21st, a National Project organized by Junior Chamber International Sri Lanka to recognize the outstanding achievements of ten young people between the ages 18 and 40 in ten pre selected categories.

* Unveiling of a monument of our dear Founder and Father of Jaycees in Sri Lanka the Late JCI, Sen. Sam Wimalasekera. The unveiling would take place at the Colombo Jaycees Secretariat at Gregory's Road, Colombo 7 at 10 a.m.

* A first day cover to mark the 50th Anniversary soon after the unveiling of the monument, at the same venue.

* Induction Ceremony of approximately 75 members on the historical day of the 50th Year Celebrations on the 22nd of August at the Trans Asia Hotel.
