Ten years after her award winning success for her song UnmadavuPremadare,Damayanthi Jayasuriya will launch her new CD 'La Sanda Paya' and cassette at a grand musical show tomorrow Monday August 23 at the John de Silva Memorial Theatre. Titled 'La Sanda Paya' the musical show which will commence at 6.30 p.m. will also feature vocalists Kamal Addaraarachchi, Rohan Shantha Bulegoda and Nuwan Nayanajith Kumara. The musical backing for Damayanthi will be by the versatile Army Oriental Musical Band under the direction of Major Wijesundera Weragoda. The choreography for the variety show organised by the Nugegoda Pansilu Kala Kendraya is by Ariyaratne Kaluarachchi while the stage decor will be handled by Edward Peterson. The themes of the songs on the CD are love songs and some lean on religious themes. The music was composed by Rohana Weerasinghe, Dr. Lionel Algama, H. M. Jayawardena, to name a few. A contingent of lyric writers have supported Damayanthi in her music and they include Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne, Vasantha Kumara Kobawaka, Ven. Thirikunamale Ananda Anunayaka Thera, Ven. Rambukkana Siddhartha Thera. Damayanthi who was nurtured in music launched off as a singer "in her cradle" so to speak at the weekly popular children's radio programme 'Lama Pitiya' broadcast over then Radio Ceylon. Her subsequent success in music and her talent in singing saw her release two CDs Hirata Muwawen and Avaraye Pipi in 1968, which paved the way for her to win the coveted Best Vocalist (Female) for the film Sapta Kanya, at the Presidential Film Awards ceremony held in 1994. The song earned her the first place in the Top Ten Song Competition organised by Sirasa. |
