Graduate jobs in first gear

The United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) scheme to provide employment to unemployed graduates gets under way when 17,000 selectees commence training in State departments on September 1 in the first phase of the Graduate Employment Scheme of the UPFA Government, Finance Ministry sources said. These sources also revealed that lists of those selected for the second phase will be released next week.

Secretaries of 22 ministries have requested 17,532 unemployed graduates to fill the

existing vacancies in institutions under their ministries. The Secretary of the Ministry of Finance has requested all ministries to send details of existing vacancies in the approved cadre as at 2002.10.01 in all State sector institutions. The Government expects to fill these vacancies by recruiting 27,000 graduates and requests are being received from most ministries, Finance Ministry sources said.

The Ministry of Education has requested the largest number of graduates to fill the vacancies in the teacher services and the number is 10,000. The Agriculture Ministry has requested 1,137 graduates to fill the vacancies in agriculture extension services and research institutions.

Other ministries and requested numbers of graduates are as follows. Ministry of Health: 700, Ministry of Women Empowerment and Social Welfare: 621, Ministry of Public Administration & Home Affairs: 574, Ministry of Transport: 642, Ministry of Public Security: 465, Ministry of Buddasasana: 603, Ministry of Science and Technology: 372, Ministry of Indigenous Medicine: 500, Ministry of Cultural Affairs: 351, Ministry of Power and Energy: 145, Ministry of Justice: 136, Ministry of Fisheries: 156, Ministry of Relief and Rehabilitation: 382, Ministry of Environment: 137, Ministry of Labour: 92, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs: 149, Ministry of Information and Media: 85, Ministry of Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation: 299, Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational and Technical Education: 305, Ministry of Plantation: 93, Ministry of Agriculture Marketing Development and Hindu Affairs: 128. Auditor General's Department has asked for 500 graduates to be recruited as audit officers. But the trade unions of the department has opposed it. However unemployed graduates will be appointed for these vacancies complying with the departmental procedures.

Finance Ministry sources said the attention has been drawn to fill the vacancies in the State banks, Inland Revenue Department, Customs Department, according to existing procedures giving priority to unemployed graduates.

The Ministry assured that there are plenty of vacancies in the State sector to place all the recruiting graduates.

The training program of the first batch of graduates will commence at the beginning of next month.

The program is scheduled with the objectives of improving the efficiency, productivity and the public relations in government sector and bring them to the level of the private sector.

Computer, English language, Administrative and Financial Regulations of the government sector, Public relations, Economic policies are the subjects included in this training program.The training period is two years and trainees will be paid a Rs.6000 monthly allowance during this period.
