Video piracy blooms by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Around 2000 pirated versions of popular teledramas and sinhala movies in Video compact Discs (VCD) and VHF tapes were recovered from a popular musical and record bar in Colombo, when the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) raided the shop last Friday. The proprietor of the shop and an employee were taken into custody. The suspects were later produced in Court. The modus operandi of the proprietor of the record bar was to record popular tele-dramas and sinhala films shown on television channels and sell it to customers for a lesser price, police said. Director, Colombo Crime Division (CCD), Sarath Lugoda said the proprietor of the bar had pirated several popular tele-dramas without paying royalty to its producers which is a violation of the intellectual property Act. Several pirated copies of the popular teledrama "Chaturrya" too was found in the shop at the time of the raid, he said. Around 25 video parlours and record bars located in Pettah area were raided a fortnight ago and a haul of pirated VCD were seized by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD). pirated videos was fined Rs 300,00 by the Magistrate Court recently. |
