Women body builders hold centre stage by Srian Obeysekere A bevy of women body-builders both local and foreigners held centre stage at Ceylon Continental Hotel last Friday. But it was not a show by the fairer sex in skin tight two piece suits of their oiled torsos to go with the music such glamour contests are associated with. It marked three local volunteers - Nisansala Damayanthi, Nadee Gunasekera, Rasadari Ekanayake and two Asian - Popov Yelena of Kazakhastan Ten Sue-Anne of Singapore and Sri Lankan fitness trainer Chamila Ponnamperuma in formal attire assembled before a ceremonial oil lamp at the launching of a pilot project to mould muscle women in South Asia in view of international competitions. As the President of the Asian and South Asian Bodybuilding Federation (ASABF), M. W. Deen pointed out, it was the commencement of a new dimension for women bodybuilders since Sri Lanka had the biggest potential in Asia. In fact, Sri Lanka was the founder member country of the Asian Body Building Federation which was formed here along with four other Asian countries. The gathering was on the eve of the South Asian Body Building Competition held last Saturday at the BMICH. A team of delegates with two athletes were here to boost the confidence of aspiring Sri Lankan muscle women. Ms. Kristina Kam, Secretary Women's Committee of the Asian Bodybuilding Federation and judge attached to the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFB) said that Sri Lanka had a good future because many women had come forward at the launch. Local aspirants were briefed on the essence of the sport. Initially, three locals - Rasadari Ekanayake, Nadee Gunasekera and Nisansala Damayanthi will participate in the Asian Women's Bodybuilding Championships to be held in Hong Kong in October courtesy the Asian Bodybuilding Federation (ABF). |
