21st Rowing Nationals : 

CRC, Ladies College favourites

Colombo Rowing Club and Ladies College who performed well in recent regattas are favoured to win the men's senior category (overall champions) and the ladies senior category titles at the six-day 21st Sri Lanka Rowing National Championships to be held from tomorrow Monday August 23 to 28 at the CRC, Beira Lake commencing from 2.30 p.m. each day.

The premier regatta is conducted by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL). This year, a record number of entries of 170 oarsmen and oarswomen from 12 affiliated clubs - Colombo Rowing Club, St. Joseph's College, S. Thomas' College, Royal, Ananda, Old Joes SC, Sri Lanka Air Force, University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka Navy, Musaeus College and Ladies College will row in over one hundred fifty races to be worked over a period of six days with the final being held on Saturday, Deva Henry, President, Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka announced at a press conference held on Wednesday at the CRC pavilion. Rowing chief Henry added that Sri Lanka Air Force oarsmen will make their debut at the nationals.

The ARASL has added two new events to the championships in order to give exposure for young rowers to gear themselves to compete in future international regattas.

The double scull event has been included for men's senior and intermediate category while for the ladies, schoolgirl sculler event has been included.

The events will be worked off in three categories - junior under-16, intermediate and senior category. The events are for junior under-16 and intermediate four, pair and scull and Ladies - four, pair and scull and for seniors - double scull, four, pair and scull.

Henry said that for the first time in 21 championships a third place will be awarded at the nationals to improve the competitiveness and enthusiasm amongst the competitors. Further in keeping up with international standards, competitors boats will be weighed which would ensure that boats of the same weight would compete amongst each other.

Coxswain's for the championships will also be weighed with the minimum weight for men specified as 55 kg and for ladies 45 kgs.

However, the under-16 category, coxswains minimum weight will be reduced by 10 kgs.

The trophies on offer are - Jerry Silva Trophy for overall men's senior category, Eraj Wijesinghe Trophy for men's intermediate, Nalin Mendis Trophy for junior boys, J. M. Perera Trophy for senior ladies, Colombo Rowing Club Trophy for intermediate ladies, HVA Trophy for Junior girls, Nihal Silva Trophy for schoolgirl sculler and Schoolboy Sculler Trophy for schoolboy sculler.

Arjuna Ranatunga, Deputy Minister of Industries, Tourism and Investment Promotions will be the Chief Guest.
