15 disciplines at National Sports Festival

Fifteen disciplines will be worked off at the National Sports Festival conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from September 7 to 11 at different venues in Badulla District. The opening and closing ceremonies will take place at the Vincent Dias Stadium, Badulla.

The grand opening ceremony with several cultural displays, march past from all competitors, leading school bands in attendance will be on September 7 commencing at 5.00 p.m.

Jeewan Kumaranatunga, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports will be the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony while Mahinda Rajapakse, Prime Minister will be the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony and the distribution of awards on September 11 from 4.00 p.m.

The events to be worked off, and dates and venues are - football from September 7 to 10 at Badulla soccer grounds, and Vincent Dias Stadium. The tournament will be for both men and women. Badminton (men-women) on September 8, 9 and 10 at St. Thomas College Bandarawela. Boxing at the Senanayake Grounds ring from September 8 to 10.

Judo (men-women) at the New Library Auditorium, Badulla on September 8 and 9. Karate (men-women) at New Library Auditorium on September 9 and 10. Wrestling at YMMA Hall, Badulla from September 8 to 10. Elle (men-women) at Vincent Dias Stadium on September 10 and 11. Weightlifting at Damma Dutha Vidyalaya on September 8, 9 and 10. Table tennis (men-women) at St. Thomas College Bandarawela from September 8 to 10. Track and field at Vincent Dias Stadium from September 8 to 11. Kabaddi (men-women) at Pradeshiya Saba grounds Haliela September 8 to 10.

Softball cricket (men-women) at cricket grounds, Badulla from September 8 to 10. Netball at cricket grounds at Badulla from September 8 to 10. Basketball (men-women) at Library grounds, Badulla from September 8 to 10. Volleyball (men-women) from September 8 to 10.

The champions in all disciplines will be presented the challenge trophies. The best player will be selected in individual events both boys and girls and special prizes will be awarded. The best teams will also receive prizes. In addition, the first three places in individual events including in the track and field will be presented with medals.

The overall champions from both men and women will be selected on the highest points aggregate and challenge trophies awarded.

Last year, Western Province carried away major honours in the athletic events and also in other disciplines.

The Most Outstanding men and women athlete will also be selected in the track and field events and challenge trophies will be presented both.
