St. Anthony's Katugastota Sports Festival to mark 150th year A leading Catholic institution in the outskirts of Kandy, St. Anthony's College, Katugastota will be celebrating their 150th year with a quadrangular sports festival from August 27 to 29 in Kandy covering cricket, basketball, badminton and rugger for three enjoyable days which will bring nostalgic memories and further enhance camaraderie and togetherness of the four great schools which have produced great sportsmen and scholars which is too numerous to mention. Giving due recognition to past sportsmen who are forgotten is also a concept of the festival. The tournament was a concept of the Old Bens in 1963 when they celebrated their Diamond Jubilee. The Old Anthonians won it that year, and it has been conducted for 38 years despite a four-year gap. There is one Anthonian, Ranjith Samarsekera, a former captain, who has made his presence felt uninterrupted in this tournament. He also captained Colts CC in the then P. Sara Trophy Tournament with distinction. A new generation of old boys have instilled a modern spirit, but however, people like Harry Jayasundera, Francis Perera, Bede Puvimanasingham, Dr. Sydney Jayawardena, H. V. Perera, Keerhti Caldera, Jimmy Vanderkoon, Maurice Perera and Ranjith Samarasekera cannot be forgotten. St. Benedict's College is only nine years junior to St. Anthony's while the Joes have well passed the 100-year mark and St. Peter's is the youngest of the lot. Besides cricket, the Anthonians have included rugger, basketball and badminton to enable more youngsters to participate. The teams will leave for Kandy on August 27 followed by a dinner at the college quadrangle. The opening ceremony will begin on Saturday August 28 at 8.00 am with the hoisting of the flags, singing of the national anthem and the college anthems of the four schools. Hosts Old Anthonians will take on the Benedictines at Katugathota while the Josephians will meet the Peterites at the Asgiriya Stadium in the curtain raiser matches that will be played 25 overs per side. In the over 40s, Bens will meet the Antonians and the Peterites, traditional rivals, St. Joseph's at the Peradeniya Campus grounds. The matches will be played concurrently. Basketball and badminton will commence at 10 a.m. on a league basis, and players who have lapsed one year after leaving school, are eligible to participate. At Nittawela, the rugger tournament will be conducted from 4 p.m. There too, players, who have lapsed one year after school are permitted to participate. In the semi- finals St. Benedict's will meet St. Anthony's and the Joes the Peterites. On Sunday August 29, the two cricket finals will be conducted from 9.30 am onwards at Katugatota and Asgiriya Stadium. The basketball and badminton finals have been scheduled at 10.45 am. Sumal Perera, Chairman Access International will be the chief guest. Jayantha Udukumbura (cricket), Lionel Pieris (basketball), C.P.P.
