12 missing as Indian trawler sinks

CALCUTTA , India , Saturday (AFP) Twelve Indian fishermen were reported missing after their trawler sank during a storm in the Bay of Bengal, an Indian coastguard spokesman told AFP.

The mechanised fishing boat went down in rough waters 230 kilometres (142 miles) off the eastern Indian city of Calcutta, spokesman Randeep Kumar Wadha said, adding that 13 fishermen were sailing in the trawler.

"A hovercraft has been deployed to search for the missing fishermen ," Wadwa said, adding that one of the fisherman was rescued from the sea by coastguard trawlers in the area.
