UN General Assembly session begins Tuesday The General Assembly of the United Nations will open its 59th regular session on September 14 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It brings together the delegations of all member states, many of them led by heads of State or Government or Foreign Ministers for an examination of a range of international issues. The regular session includes a general debate which provides member states the opportunity to express their views on the most pressing international issues. This year, it will open on September 21. Prior to the general debate, the Secretary-General will present his 'Report on the Work of the Organisation'. Jean Ping, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Gabonese Republic has been designated as the President of the 59th General Assembly session. This year there are 158 separate items on the agenda of the regular session of the General Assembly. Prevention of armed conflict, the situation in Afghanistan, USA sanctions against Cuba, the situation in the Middle East, Palestine, Nuclear Disarmament, Sustainable Development, International Economic Co-operation and Globalisation and Interdependence are among them. The General Assembly, set up in 1945 under the United Nations Charter, is the United Nations main deliberative organ and provides a forum for multilateral discussion of the full range of international issues covered by the Charter. The Assembly comprises all members of the United Nations and meets in regular session each year from September to December and thereafter as required. |
