Indian Navy Chief here today

Indian Navy Chief Admiral Arun Prakash will arrive here today on a five-day visit. During his stay in Colombo, Admiral Arun Prakash will meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and the three service chiefs.

The Indian Navy Commander will visit the Naval dockyard in Colombo and Trincomalee. He will also pay homage at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy. Admiral Arun Prakash graduated from the National Defence Academy, Khadawasla in June '64 and was commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy on 01 Jan. 1966. He specialised in aviation, and qualified as a career pilot on the Sea Hawk jet fighter in 1968. He has subsequently flown 2500 hours on a variety of single and multi-engined aircraft from the aircraft carrier and ashore.

Admiral Arun Prakash is a graduate of the IAF Test Pilots School, the Defence Services Staff College, and the US Naval War College. He has served afloat, in command of the missile boat INS Chatak, the frigates INS Beas and INS Vindhyagiri, and the aircraft carrier INS Viraat. His aviation tenures include the command of two Air Squadrons, and the Naval Air Station INDS Hansa. He was in command of INAS 300 when this squadron was re-equipped with the Sea harrier VSTOL fighter in the UK in 1983.

Promoted to Rear Admiral in 1993, he served as ACNS (Air), Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet and Assistant Chief of Personnel. In the rank of Vice Admiral, he has been Commandant National Defence Academy (1997-99) and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters (1999-2001).

In October 2001 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the newly created Unified Andaman and Nicobar Command and served in that capacity till taking over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command on 31 December 2002. Prior to taking over the helm of the Navy as the Chief of the Naval Staff on 31 July 2004, the Admiral was the Vice Chief since 17 October 2003.
