'Heart Beat 2004'

"Save the Child Surgery Mercy Mission of Sri Lanka" will sponsor Dr. Conal Austin, the well-known Consultant Paediatric/Adult Cardiac Surgeon of Guy's Hospital, UK and his 14-member team, to visit Sri Lanka to perform acute heart surgeries on children of the poorest of the poor of our society, recommended by the National Health Authorities.

This team visited Sri Lanka in the years 2002 and 2003 and performed on more than 50 child patients.

The previous occasions were hosted by Standard Chartered Bank and well-wishers. This team has rendered yeoman service on a humanitarian basis, spending their vacation time on a voluntary basis.

"This year too this team is expected to visit Sri Lanka in the third week of November. The Director of Health Services has sent a letter of invitation at the request of our Association to welcome this team. We are made to understand that there are around 50 or more child patients awaiting heart surgery. Each of them would cost around Rs. 500,000.

The parents of these children who come from the very bottom line of our society are unable to meet this cost and as a result the future of these children are at risk. Hence, we have come forward to help these children, the future leaders of our country to lead a normal life.

"We have to meet the cost of airfare, accommodation, local travel etc. for the team. In addition, we have to provide pre and post surgery care, medicines and provide a safe house for these patients and their parents whilst at Colombo.

"Since we have to meet this commitment, our Association has decided to float a fund-raising campaign called 'Heart Beat 2004'. A sticker is priced at Rs. 100 each. This function will take place on September 14 at Taj Samudra, Colombo at 4.30 p.m. and the Minister of Health Nimal Siripala de Silva, MP, has agreed to grace the occasion."
