LTTE awaits positive response this week

by S. Selvakumar and Ananth Palakidnar

The LTTE firmly expects a positive and constructive response from the Government to recommence peace talks. This they expect this time round through Norwegian special envoy Erik Solheim who arrives in the island tomorrow.

Solheim is scheduled to meet with President Chandrika Kumaratunga tomorrow itself and later will meet with the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe before proceeding to Kilinochchi on Thursday to meet LTTE political wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan. LTTE media spokesman Daya Master told the Sunday Observer that since the UPFA Government assumed power there were conflicting signals regarding the recommencement of peace talks.

"We are much worried over divergent statements made by various political leaders in the South on the resumption of talks and this has created much ambiguity in the minds of LTTE leaders", Daya Master added.

He further charged that attempts have been made in the recent past to sabotage the ceasefire agreement both politically and militarily.

Daya Master also said that the LTTE will not deviate from the ISGA proposals to recommence talks and expects that Solheim's visit this time round will be fruitful.

Erik Solheim last week met with LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham in London and had a lengthy discussion but the outcome of the talks were not made known to the press. He is expected to convey the LTTE message to the President when he meets her tomorrow.

President Kumaratunga addressing the 53rd anniversary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party last week in Galle said that things were moving positively towards resuming talks with the LTTE.
