Sri Lanka beat Kazakhastan 20-10 to enter Cup quarters

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.

Sri Lanka beat Kazakhastan by 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to 10 (2 tries) to qualify for the quarter finals of the IRB World Cup Sevens Asian Region qualifying tournament sponsored by Singer SriLankan Airlines and organised by the Kandy Sports Club and played at Nittawela yesterday. Sri Lanka led 19-5 at half time.

Rain during the day made ground conditions wet and slightly slippery making ball handling and running a little difficult but the Sri Lankans came up with a good performance.

In the 3rd minute Sri Lanka opened scoring when centre Pradeep Liyanage collected a pass from scrum half Amjad Buksh and scored far right which went unconverted. Shortly afterwards the hosts increased their lead when scrum half Amjad Buksh sold a couple of dummies to score under the post, and he converted the try. Sri Lanka's third try came through centre Indrajith Bandaranayake, who collected a pass in front of the pavilion named after him, and blitzed his way to score under the post and Amjad Buksh added the extra points.

Just before the short break Kazakhastan's centre Alexander Plkonnikov took the short tap and ran a good 30 metres to score under the post. Fly half Ivan Golushkin added the extra points.

Sri Lanka scored again in the second through some good running by winger Sanjeewa Jayasinghe who scored under the post with Buksh added the extra points. Then just before the short the final whistle winger Anton Rudoy scored an unconverted try for Kazakhastan.

Thailand beat Lanka

In the other pool match Thailand defeated Sri Lanka by 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to 10 (2 tries) after leading 19-0 at lemons.

It was some inept performance by Sri Lanka in the first half which contributed to this defeat as they appeared to be indecisive and did not run with the ball well. They tried to make amends in the second half but then it was too late as they had conceded a substantial lead in the initial half.

The Cup quarter final run up is Korea versus Malaysia, Japan versus Sri Lanka, Thailand vs China, Chinese Taipei vs, Arabian Gulf.

The semi-finals of the Bowl Championships will be between Singapore and Guam while Kazakhastan will take on India.

Sri Lanka will have a tough battle in their hands to contain the Asian rugby giants Japan who are in spanking form at present.

The highest score in the tournament was by China who defeated India by 77 points (11 goals) to nil.

The results of the other pool matches played yesterday were, Thailand beat Kazakhastan 33-5, Japan beat India 45 - 5, Chinese Taipei beat Guam 31 - 14, Malaysia beat Guam 19 - 14, Arabian Gulf beat Singapore 24 - 0, Chinese Taipei beat Malaysia 45-7, Japan beat China 31 - 5, Korea beat Singapore 28 - 7.

The World Cup semi finals will be worked off 2.50 pm and 3.10 pm, The Bowl final at 3.30 pm and The Cup final at 5.30 pm.

The Schools' Cup finals will be at 4.30 pm.
